Revit Family:  A Definition

  • Families are classes of elements in a category
  • A family groups elements with: 
  A common set of parameters (properties)

  Identical use

  Similar graphical representation  

  • Different elements in a family may have: 

 Different values for some or all properties

The set of properties, their names and meaning, is the same.  


Revit Family are of 3 types

  • System Family
  • In-Place Family
  • Component Family (Loadable Family) 

    Component Families are of 2 types: 

  • Model (3D)
  • View Specific (2D) /Annotation Families

    Examples of Model (3D): 

  • Doors
  • Windows
  • Equipment
  • Furnishings
  • Generic Models

    Examples of View Specific (2D): (Annotation Families)  

  • Tags
  • Symbols
  • Detail Items
  • Title Blocks
  • Generic Annotations
